Acupuncture as Experienced by Alec
When Kylee first asked me if I'd do acupuncture, I didn't really know what to say. I was still thinking about my answer when she told me I had an appointment (Sigh). We found a local clinic that specializes in acupuncture treating infertility - Health & Beauty Acupuncture. Going into the appointment, I didn't really know what to expect. First was the paperwork before, going through everything that you are physically and emotionally feeling. Everything from back pain, to infertility and sleeping problems.
The general idea of acupuncture is based on the theory that there is a vital energy behind all life forms. This energy called "qi", circulates throughout the body along certain pathways. Acupuncture corrects qi flow returning the body to balance. According to Chinese medical theory by increasing the male partners whole body health, the sperm will be of better quality.
Once Sharon, the acupuncturist, had identified which areas of my body related to the problems i was having, she started putting the needles in. Each time she adjusts the needle positions to get the best results. The needles if you weren't paying attention or watching, would feel like someone giving you a slight pinch with their fingers then the pain goes away. Then, nap time!
On top of acupuncture treatments, there are some supplements thats can be useful to improve overall health and sperm quality. I'm currently taking Panax Ginseng, Ashwagandha, Fertilaid For Men, Damiana Leaves, and a prescription from our RE. Each of these herbal supplements help in their own way, but they all have one thing in common, they boost fertility.
*Consult your doctor before taking any supplements.
As to the question if it works, we'll see. Ideally the minimum course of treatment for men is three months. But improvements in sperm quality and quantity can happen quickly making acupuncture a great aid in IVF.
With IVF coming up in August we have decided to make a donation option. You can still book your photo sessions with Portraits by Meg, where all profits will be donated to our IVF fund.
